RFID vs ANPR for Weighbridge Vehicle Identification

Accurate vehicle identification is the foundation of unmanned weighbridge operation. Two technologies dominate industrial gate automation: RFID and ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition). Each has strengths, and many modern installations use both.
RFID (UHF tags on windscreen or bracket): - Fast read at 8–12 metre range without stopping - Works reliably in dust, rain, and low light - Best for fixed fleets: cement trucks, mining tippers, contract carriers - Requires tag issuance and database management
ANPR (camera-based plate recognition): - No tag required—uses registration number - Ideal for mixed or visiting vehicles - Provides photographic evidence with each transaction - Accuracy depends on camera placement, plate condition, and lighting
Dual-mode (recommended for most plants): RFID handles registered fleet vehicles at high speed. ANPR captures plate data as backup and for unregistered visitors. Mismatch alerts flag potential fraud or tag swap attempts.
