Load Cell Selection for Heavy-Duty Truck Scales
Compression load cells, capacity rating, IP protection, and cabling—essentials for reliable weighbridge performance.
Load cells are the sensing core of every electronic weighbridge. Selecting the correct type, capacity, and protection rating determines long-term accuracy and maintenance cost.
Compression load cells for truck scales: Most pit type and pitless weighbridges use compression load cells mounted under the platform. Each cell supports a portion of the total load. A typical 60–100 tonne bridge uses 4 to 8 cells with redundant capacity for dynamic loading when trucks enter and exit.
Capacity and safety margin: Rated capacity should exceed maximum expected axle load with engineering margin for shock and corner loading. Over-specifying wastes budget; under-specifying causes drift and early failure.
Environmental protection: Industrial sites expose load cells to moisture, dust, and temperature swings. IP67 or IP68 rated cells with sealed stainless steel housings are standard for outdoor weighbridges. Cable entry and junction box sealing are equally critical.
Installation and maintenance: Proper mounting eliminates side forces and binding. Regular inspection of cell bolts, cable integrity, and junction box desiccant prevents silent accuracy loss. Replace cells in matched sets when one fails to maintain corner balance.
